Michael Mortilla has composed award winning music, lyrics and sound designs for hundreds of theater productions ranging from ancient Greek theater to Shakespearian classics, and from abstract post-modern works to Broadway musical theater. His music and sound designs have received awards from Backstage West, the LA Weekly, and the Santa Barbara Independent for productions of Alice in Wonderland (Lit Moon Theater) and Johnny Got his Gun (Stages Theater Center, Arye Gross Artistic Director.)
Mr. Mortilla has been music director and conductor for productions of traditional Broadway musicals such Zorba the Greek, Cabaret, Man of LaMancha, 1776, Anything Goes, Kiss Me Kate, The Pajama Game, The Boyfriend, The Boys From Syracuse and others. In addition to music direction, he also served as rehearsal pianist, percussionist and/or guitarist in many of these productions.
Michael has also scored several of his own musicals including The Web, Love Rides the Rails, and Lessons in New York (for Harry Chaplin & Jay Broad's Performing Arts Foundation Theater) and Liz Astrada and My Magic Shoes for the University of California and the Lobero Theater. He often serves as lyricist as well.
